(Theatre lighting terminology) Short term for a lighting instrument which uses a Fresnel lens to control the spread of the light. A fresnel can be focussed by moving the lamp (the bulb itself) back and forth between the reflector and the lens. When the lamp is hot, it is very possible to smash the lamp on the reflector by moving it too quickly.
