Like dem bones said in that other node, it's a form of pain relief that works in a localised area, unlike general anaesthesia. Lignocaine is the premier local anaesthetic drug (used by millions of dentists and doctors worldwide!) although there are others such as Bupivacaine and Mepivacaine.
