A common phrase in genetics used to describe the state of a genetic system that, owing to some manipulation on the part of the investigator, no longer produces its usual phenotype. A mutation in a gene coding for some enzyme is a loss of function mutation if enzymes produced by the mutant allele have had their activity dropped to some undetectable or unquantifiable level.
