In physics and chemistry, the number of neutrons and protons (nucleons) in the nucleus of an atom. For example, carbon-14 has a mass number of 14 because it has 6 protons and 8 neutrons. The approximate mass of a given nucleus is obtained by multiplying the mass number by one atomic mass unit.
