Pedon is a term in soil science, it is the concept of soil as a three dimensional area. It is more specifically the smallest volume that may called a soil. A pedon extends down to the depth of plant roots or the lower limit of the genetic soil horizons. It is a lateral cross section roughly the size of a coffin, but can range in size from 1square meter to 10 square meters depending on the particular horizons.
