In cryptography this is the alphabet of the plaintext message. It is what the cipher alphabet substituting.
For example the English language is a plain alphabet. But they aren't limited to just letters, but can include any characters that might be in the plaintext as long as the is a substitute for the character in the cipher alphabet.
