The term progressive transmission means any manual transmission that requires you to go through all of the gears in order, (without skipping any of them). As opposed to a selective transmission, which allows you to select any gear at any time. These transmissions are most common today on motorcyles and ATV's, but were common on a wide variety of vehicles in the past.
