Since the release of the DSM III in 1980, the distinction between a technical "psychopath" and an antisocial personality disorder patient has become blurred. Most psychopaths have APD, but most APD patients are not psychopaths.

Diagnostic criteria for Psychopathy:
• egocentricity
• deceit
• shallow affect
• manipulativeness
• selfishness
• lack of empathy, guilt or remorse
