The thing that defines where your local telephone service originates from, and where other telephone calls are destined to. It is called a rate center so your phone company can bill you for long distance if you call someone in another rate center or&exchange that is not within your local calling area. If you call someone in another rate center that is a local call, then you aren't billed.
