The concept stemming from the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Plessy v. Ferguson (1892) that it was all right to segregate the different races, as long as the facilities for each were equal. (In practice, the facilities for white people were generally much better than those for other races.) Ended by the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954.
