In Dante's Inferno, this is an act of farting. It occurs at the end of the twenty-first canto by a demon. It's a good thing he wasn't near a flame, or else he would have caused a small explosion perhaps letting lots of demons out of hell. This is how many a horror movie and perhaps the Doom series of video games could be explained.
