A generic design for a family of type, generally available in a range of sizes, weights, slopes and other stylistic variations. Not the same thing as a font (or fount to British English speakers until the advent of computers) which is a set of characters in a single size/slope/weight: Helvetica is a typeface, 10 pt Helvetica bold italic is a font.
