A typographical error. Today, with the aid of spelling- and grammar-checkers, a simple typo can be turned into a serious fiasco. For instance:

"the speech" mistyped as "hte speech" gets respelled as "hate speech" and grammaticized into "the hate speech." Hilarity ensues.
