A phrase used to mean selling out. Originally derived from the Bible:
"They went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them." (Judges 2:17)
The reference is to the worship of Canaanite gods by the Israelites. The whoring would have been more literal at the time: the other gods in question were worshipped with fertility rites and cult prostitution.
