A woodblock is a solid rectangle of wood usually sporting rounded off edges. Lengthwise there is a portion of the block hollowed out about an inch from the top, leaving an empty space of a half an inch between the block proper and it's top, otherwise known as the playing surface.

A woodblock is a very piercing, striking instrument often used to symbolize something like horses or foot steps. It is struck with a xylophone mallet.
