Wrench Flats are opposed flat planes made by removing material from something which is not flat, for the purpose of turning it with a wrench of some sort. They can be found on nuts and bolts, spark plugs, on the valve stem in many water faucets, and on the shanks of some tools like screwdrivers and pullers. They are sometimes referred to simply as "flats".
