Saint Florian is the
patron Saint of
Fire Fighters.
Even though I'm not
Catholic, I seldom leave our firehouse
without saying a quick hello and asking for his protection.
The Miracle he performed is said to be pouring a single bucket of water on a burning town,
dousing the fire entirely.
He was an officer in the Roman army and when commanded to kill a group of Christians,
refused and proclaimed his faith. He was martyred circa 304.
The details were grusome. He was flayed alive and tossed into a river with a millstone tied around his neck.
He is represented in works of art as a young man, sometimes in armor,
sometimes not, pouring water onto a flamed engulfed church. In other works he is depicted as
leaning on a millstone or being thrown into a river tied to a millstone.
