Please give my e2gle theme a try and let me know what you think. I've decided to try introducing some more whitespace, which I think is sorely lacking, to E2. A lot of stuff is removed from the front page, and there are no nodelets. Paradoxically it will work best with ALL of your nodelets turned on (it is easier to say that than list specific nodelets). And if you don't turn on the zen epicenter first, or if you're an IE6 user, you're entering a world of pain. A world of pain (though in the latter case you're probably there already).
