On April 15, 1817,
Laurent Clerc and
Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet started the
Connecticut Asylum at Hartford for the Instruction of
Deaf and Dumb Persons. As the first
school for the
deaf in the United States, it is also the birthplace of
American Sign Language.
Today, the American School for the Deaf offers residential and day programs for deaf and hard of hearing children from infancy through high school and into vocational post-secondary education, all using the Total Communication method of teaching.
