The shortest distance between two people is never a straight line,  it is often a series of circles 
sometimes ending in pieces,
rarely a single day or a tragic moment

I do not recall a particular conversation
looking back I only remember an accumulation of words:
those spoken and others withheld 


People would ask what happened to us,  
as if there were an unexpected illness
maybe a car accident? 


I ponder the question
and lacking an answer
just shake my head
