Since today is the first day of summer, I thought it would be a good idea to honor the folks who brought us this song which will always be the soundtrack for summer for many, many people. In the Summertime was on their second album, "Electronically Tested," in 1971. Ray Dorset was the singer and songwriter here, and Mungo Jerry evolved out of an earlier group called "The Good Earth." It was primarily an English jug band, probably influenced by what John Sebastian and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band were doing at the time, but I can't be sure of that.

I do know that there's never been a better anthem for the onset of summer, especially when you're young enough to be able to withstand the heat.

In the summertime, when the weather is high,
you can stretch right up an' touch the sky,
when the weather's fine, you got women, you got women on your mind,
have a drink, have a drive, go out an' see what you can find.
