In bed, seeking calm
Tossing and turning
trying to block out the sound of traffic
Head on pillow but
mind at 100 miles an hour
racing through the list of forgotten calls and misplaced keys
Sometime after one,
her thoughts move to a low hum
search engine shifts to idle
Asleep beneath the watchful eyes of pilot lights

lavender eyelids droop,
belying her exhaustion.
tiny wails of protest in my ear.
she fights sleep with balled fists,
lets out yawns bigger than herself,
rubs at big cerulean eyes.
her head hits my shoulder,
reaching around my neck
to hold on as sleep arrives.
i sink into the rocking chair,
a small sigh let out in my hair.
my heart is so full of her
i can’t imagine anything more.
We live in a glade, my mother and I. We live in a house that sits in a forest. And we live with my father. My mother and I are quiet people, except when we laugh. Then we are loud, and we go on and on. My father’s a talker. He has no sense of humor. He goes on and on but says very little.
