• The conflict between the British and French in America (the French and Indian War) becomes a general European conflict, later called the Seven years' War:
• Frederick the Great of Prussia invades Saxony.
• The French capture Minorca from the British after Admiral John Byng does not comply with an order to sail there to defend it.
• Col. John Armstrong destroys the Lenni-Lenape (Delaware) Indian stronghold at Kittanning, PA.
• New Hampshire Gazette founded in Portsmouth, with the first printing press in the colony.

• A stagecoach line links New York City and Philadelphia for the first time.
• Siraj-ud-daulah becomes Nawab of Bengal, and briefly expels the British from Calcutta.  During this time, it is reported that the Nawab had 146 people were crammed into a small airless prison cell at Fort William in that city. After one night, 123 had supposedly died in what was later known as the Black Hole of Calcutta.
• Samuel Johnson, flush with the success of his Dictionary, solicits subscriptions to publish the work of William Shakespeare.
