The
mouse in
Daniel Keyes' story
Flowers for Algernon. In the story, Algernon was the test subject in an
experiment to dramatically increase the
intelligence of a
mammalian
brain. The
test was a qualified
success on Algernon, which led it to be tested on a
human subject. Algernon was a
barometer for the success of the experiment. Algernon died from
brain damage caused by the experiment.
