The first sector on a drive (Sector 0,0,1) is reserved for the Boot Record (BR).

The Boot Record contains the bootstrap routine, a machine language routine that launches the operating system. The BR also contains the BIOS Parameter Block (BPB), which identifies the disk parameters, such as bytes per sector, sectors per track and tracks per disk.
