The Pontus was an area in northeastern Anatolia, in what is now Turkey. Its culture was influenced by Greece and Persia.

In 63 B.C. the Pontus was incorporated into the Roman Empire.

The Black Sea was called the Pontus Euxinus by the ancient Greeks. Its waters were stormy and dangerous; calling it "hospitable sea" was meant to placate the god of its waters.
