I have a nickel. It has Jefferson's head on the front. All is good. But when I flip it over, there's no Monticello! Instead, there's the symbols for the Louisiana Purchase. From top to bottom, we have:

• The text "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA",
• The text "LOUISIANA PURCHASE",
• The year, 1803,
• A hatchet, along with a pipe (thanks ueni)
• Two shaking hands, one with a military cuff, the other adorned with beads and an eagle,
• And the text "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "FIVE CENTS"

The US Mint released this as the first nickel in the new Westward Journey series. The next nickel in the series, to be released Fall 2004, will contain a depiction of Lewis' and Clark's expedition. This series will continue from 2003 to 2005, with presumably two changes per year. After this time, the Monticello will resume its rightful place.
