let me first state that i have no problem with
butch lesbians in general. most of the ones i've known are
pretty cool.
that said, there is a certain classification of butch girls who annoy the shit out of me. i understand the whole rejction of
traditional concepts of femininity. i understand that a
buzz cut and
fuzzy legs make a hell of a lot more sense, in terms of comfort and convenience, than carefully maintained hair and carefully waxed legs.
but
when a woman chooses not only to
go butch, but to model herself on
the lowliest specimen of masculinity, the
frat boy, i have issues. i suppose the primary cause of my annoyance is the
attitude, the classic
non-creativity displayed by frat boys the world over. they wear
golf clothes, they play sports, they watch sports, they adhere in nearly every way to that old
male archetype of mudane, unemotional, testosterone-driven existence.
it makes me want to shake them while shouting, '
you're a girl! for fuck's sake, don't
sell out just because you like other girls! by all means, co-opt the perks of being a boy, but don't try and turn yourself into an
alpha male! you march right home, take off that
abercrombie & fitch hat, and get your girlfriend to lend you a
rainbow brite t-shirt or something.'
i guess that's really the whole problem.. frat boys have always been synonymous with
misogyny, while
lesbians have been associated just as often with
feminism. as generalizations go, both are pretty accurate. there's a
contradiction there that leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
and
the world needs more frat boys like kindergarteners need crack cocaine.
