A device which is intended as a drop off and pickup location for mail, mostly regarding the USPS. A mailbox may be fixed to a wall, a small slot in a door, a box mounted up on a post near the driveway, etc. Some have little flags on the side which may be raised or lowered by the mailman to indicate to the recipient whether the mail has been delivered. A game involving mailboxes mounted on posts is mailbox baseball.
