2001 : The year that Tortoise struck back. After the serene beauty of TNT, the portrait of destruction and rebirth of millions now living will never die, and the declaration of their eponymous debut, Standards finds Tortoise at a crossroads. Expectations were high, and a growing crowd with varying tastes and desires were waiting eagerly for another taste.

With the cover depicting a resewn flag, curved and tailored, in combination with the raucous concentration of noise and feedback that Seneca starts with, coupled with the recent tainted election of George W. Bush into the presidency, it is hard to separate Tortoise's new album from politics. Wheras previously one would find that thier music envisioned an alternate reality of escapism rather than direct confrontation with the powers that be, Standards takes the world and rips it fucking apart. It is no suprise that prior to playing Seneca at live shows, the members of Tortoise stand facing the audience in reverence, as if pledging allegiance to a notion of the country that we as their listeners privately share and covet.

"Unfortunately for me it all falls into place a bit too conveniently... You can't use the American flag innocently -- it's so loaded and it's gonna be interesting to see what people think. When it was suggested, all of our immediate reactions were, 'Well, we can't do that! That would be fucked up.' But then after that we were like, 'It's so fucked up we should do it'." - Douglas McCombs

The production on the album is exceedingly smooth. Electronics blend with acoustics and yet the songs remain more separate and defined than previous albums. Noise becomes more of an element as if the signal-to-noise ratio had lost its balance, and they couldn't help/fight the noise back from getting into the music. Disruptions.

"We did five little shows... I think it really helped us out -- we went back and re-recorded a few tracks and they definitely benefited from playing them out live. On Standards there's a huge range of compositional approaches... It wasn't a direct reaction against any of our other work, like TNT or whatever, but there was this unspoken feeling that we wanted to do something really direct -- shorter songs, more compact structures -- something really visceral." - John McEntire

The journey is compact. Searching, looking for things, trying to make sense of the world that is left bloodied on your fingers. Romantic excursions are made (Monica), chaos is summoned, and things are put back in their place. This shoft-shelled creature isn't always all cerebellum and resistance, either--Standards finds the creature more playful than ever. A mixture of jazz, funk, ambience, and glitch make this album most easily concievable as music, wheras TNT and Millions Now Living Will Never Die played out like etheral sounds from the very source of human consciousness. Standards gets better every time.
