This letter was created originally for
medieval Latin to represent the
diphthong that until then was represented by the two letters ae (In classic Latin this was pronounced as the word 'eye' and in medieval Latin as the vowel in 'hey').
The two combinations (ae/æ) were quite often interchanged.
