The day to remember Douglas Adams, most famous as the author of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, who passed away on May 11, 2001. Adams claimed that a towel was the single most important thing a hitchhiker could carry. People who enjoyed Adams' books and/or general wittiness are asked to carry a towel around with them for the day, and raise awareness and interest in Adams' life and works.

This is all well and good, but there are several factions trying to decide just when Towel Day is supposed to be.

Possible Towel Days include

  • February 11, the 42nd day of the year
  • March 11, Douglas Adams' birthday (also known as Happy Adams Day)
  • May 11, the day he died
  • The first Thursday after May 11
  • May 25, two weeks after his death, giving a suitable wake
  • The Friday before the 42nd week-end day of the year (occasionally falls on May 25, as it did the year he died)
  • The last Friday in May

However, of these, May 25 seems to have the widest support.

There is also a Second Day of Remembering, held 42 days after May 11, that is slightly more somber.
