A
Civilization advance.
In its essential form, physics is the study of the many forms of matter and
energy and of the way they interact with themselves and each other. The earliest physics was limited in scope to
phenomena that were open to personal observation and experiment: motion,
light, sound, and the like. The development of observing instruments quickly expanded physicists'
horizons, as it has continued to do. Discoveries in physics rarely have direct application, but they reliably lead to advances in
technology and in our understanding of the
universe.
