The American spy plane (not bomber) designated Utility-2. Designed in the 70s as a high altitude reconaissance aircraft primarily for taking pictures of Soviet missile and bomber bases deep within the Soviet Union. It was believed to have a cruising altitude higher than any conceivable SAM missile could reach. CIA pilot Francis Gary Powers found this to be false. The hard way. His U2 was shot down, recovered intact, and he was captured for almost the duration of the Cold War. Some experts blame Powers for failing to activate the self-destruction explosives on the U2 in time, but I side with those who would be way too scared to hit a little red button while their plane was falling to earth.
