Christina Ricci - The Person

Ricci is arguably one of the most talented actors that has come out of Hollywood. She was born in Santa Monica, California (February 12, 1980), the youngest of 4 children. The family moved to Montclair, New Jersey when she was seven. Around the same time, a movie critic told her parents to get her an agent, when she was seen on stage during a school play.

Apparantly, her parents divorced after she filmed Addams Family Values in 1993, and she has not spoken with her father since.

She is now 5 ft 1 (1m55) tall, drives a Porsche Boxter and seems to be hot property in the movie industry.

Christina Ricci - The Career

She made her debut with Mermaids in 1990, a title where she played the Kate Flax, the younger sister of Charlotte Flax (played by nobody less than Winona Ryder). The movie failed to impress the general audience, but that shed light on Ricci as a talented, promising actress. As a 10-year old, she didn't only have the "innocent child" look, but it turned out that she could actually act.

Ricci's big break-through came with Addams Family, where she brilliantly played the role of the morbid daughter of the family, Wednesday. After this she has had roles in a variety of great and not-so-great movies.

Rici was turned down four times for the role of Lolita in Lolita, the 1997 remake of the classic Stanley Kubrick film. The role eventually went to Dominique Swain.
Ricci was also turned down for one of the lead roles in the 1997 blockbuster remake of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
Ricci turned down the role of Ronna in the blockbuster hit Go in 1999 because of scheduling conflicts. (boo!)

She was in Cher's music video for the Shoop Shoop song (It's in his kiss) and in Moby's Natural Blues video.

  • In this movie, starring Johnny Depp and Benincio Del Toro, Ricci has a minor role as a stoned-out runaway teen who paints pictures of Barbara Streisand. The movie is a funny yet fairly non-provoking view of drug abuse. Also aimed at a narrow audience, it might not be a good movie for everyone. If you are a Ricci fan, however, GO SEE IT!
    
• 1998 The Opposite of Sex ****
  • A great, yet confusing film, this one. Ricci plays the lead role of Deedee Truitt, who steals her homosexual brother's (Martin Donovan) boyfriend, before getting into a whole lot of intricacies. This movie is also Lisa Kudrow's debut role as a non-Friends actress.

  • This movie gets a two-star / five-star rating. The movie is a big, confusing pile of shite, and hadn't been worth watching if it hadn't been for Ricci. her charming role of the sweet, innocent girl named Leiah (?) who gets kidnapped by Billy Brown (Vincent Gallo) and who decides that being kidnapped is quite okay is great, this movie is where Ricci transforms from being a good child actor to a great "proper" actor.
    
• 1997 The Ice Storm ****
  • The Ice Storm is an adaption of a dovel by Rick Moody, in which Ricci plays Wendy. She plays a satiric, cynical little girl who is completely obsessed by the Watergate scandal. The movie is quite good and has some great, pitch-black humour, if you look for it. As with the book, The Ice Storm is aimed at a fairly narrow audience. Ricci co-stars with Sigourney Weaver, Elijah Wood and Kevin Kline

  • The filmation of Casper, everyone's favourite friendly ghost, became a huge success for children all over the world. Ricci has one of the lead roles, a role she handles brilliantly once again.
    
• 1993 Addams Family Values *****
  • The return of the Addams Family! This production was quite a lot more dark and sinister than the 1991 original, but Ricci's role was better developed, and the movie as a whole seems funnier than the original. It established Ricci even more in the film world
    
• 1993 The Cemetery Club *
  • To say that this movie flopped is to say it too strongly, bat at least in Europe it never really caught on. Ricci's role of Jess seemed badly developed, and (as with many movies built on theatre plays), it fails to engage the viewer fully.
    
• 1991 The Addams Family *****
  • ... was Ricci's major breakthrough. This family comedy about an odd goth-like family was based on the '60s cartoon drawn by Charles Addams. The movie's morale is that people should not reject people who are different. This, combined with having a damn funny script and a shockingly great cast (with Ricci as one of the true gems), made the Addams Family a hit.
