Hapag Lloyd is Germany's leading international freight cargo transportation company.
It was formed in 1970 from the merger of two long established rival companies; Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (or 'Hapag') and North German Lloyd (NDL). They both ran hugely successful ocean lines. The history of the two dates back 150 years. During both World Wars, they lost most of their ships.
They run a holiday cruise fleet and they also make and sell cargo container modules.
If you hang around dockyards, you will see thousands of orange 'Hapag-Lloyd' containers stacked amongst the Maersk containers and the P&O Nedlloyds.
The Hapag-Lloyd fleet is made up from 31 ships of varing
classes;
Liners within each class have their own
express route to
somewhere in the
world.
Not everything can fit into a container, but Hapag Lloyd transports everything, be it elephants, buses or even other boats!
Hapag Lloyd is also the
pen name of one of
Viz comic's regular letters page
contributors.
