From September 19, 2005 until October 7, 2005, I had the experience of working for Lowe's in Lake Charles, Louisiana, as part of a recovery/rebuild team. I left the store manager there a note on how to get to E2, and told him to refer his employees here, in order to read my thanks, which is below. So... I hope this clears up any confusion to all you non-Lowe's employees.

Here goes...

Because I am not sure which of you were present for the first couple of weeks of work post Hurricane Rita, I am sending this message to all of you.

I would like to thank all of you with whom I worked for your hospitality in welcoming us into your store, and for the diligence and hard work each and all of you demonstrated by shouldering this tremendous burden of rebuilding together. I have never felt more proud to be affiliated as a team member with such a truly talented and dedicated group of people as yourselves. Your appreciation for the work that we, the recovery/rebuild teams, put in is legendary as well. You have my everlasting thanks for reaffirming my belief that I work for a deeply caring organization, but more importantly, that people are stronger than a storm, and when pushed to their limits, people are capable of outstanding acts of goodness and kindness.

I know I never got a chance to meet most of you. To those of you who weren't present, be proud of your co-workers who were. I can sincerely say that you're tremendously lucky to get the chance to work with these people on a daily basis. Appreciate them and the work they put in, and let them know you do.

I never got much of a chance to say goodbye to most of you who I met, but in a way, I'm glad, because I would like to extend the invitation to all of you to remain in touch. You may acquire a free account on everything2.com, or e-mail me at my home address:

Sir Norris: still Not Smoking.

First off, thanks to those of you who've sent messages of help and/or support. It's much appreciated. According to the leaflet I have here, my body should be almost completely clear of nicotine very soon. Today and tomorrow, however, are apparently the worst days for withdrawal symptoms; so that's something to look forward to. I have also developed a cough, which is apparently due to my lungs clearing out mucus and debris.

On the plus side, I have already noticed some good effects. I certainly felt better getting up this morning and although the cravings are getting stronger, they seem to be getting less frequent. All in all, I seem more positive today than yesterday. I have drunk three cups of coffee with three sugars in each, though.

So, I should probably slow down the daylogging from now on, but it has to be said that it really has helped. From time to time, my mind has begun to convince me that I don't really want to give up after all, but the fact that I have logged it so much makes me think that I can't give in now. If I hadn't daylogged this today, it'd look like I'd failed to not smoke for more than two days and that is a bit crap really.

So I'll keep daylogging but only on important days. One week of not smoking, two weeks, a month, etc - if I ever get that far. If anyone notices I'm missing one of these, send me a /msg - ask if I've just forgotten, or if there's another reason...

So there's another hurdle over with. No-one (except the college nurse and, or course, the denizens of the nodegel) knew that I'd taken up not smoking. Just now, however, a friend asked me to pop out for a traditional quick fag. And I did go. But I didn't smoke. So it's a bit more out in the open.

The whole experience did bring on a massive craving for a cigarette, though. Plunging myself into work and noding today has more-or-less completely taken my mind off it all untill now. And I did find myself standing in the smoking shelter inhaling rather deeply.
